MARIE ANTOINETTEinspired dress

Marie Antoinette Dress.

November 2007

Unfortunately I didn't have enough fabric for what I originally wanted to do with this dress. I was going to have an attached underskirt of the same yellow colour but had to compromise and use my existing cream underskirt instead. So that kind of bummed me out, but I reckon it still looks awesome.

The pattern I used is the same pattern from my pink Georgian dress, but slightly altered. I made the point at the front smaller, completely removed the point at the back, tweaked the neckline, straightened the sides of the bodice, and most importantly, made the closure at the front instead of the back - it closes with about a dozen hooks and eyes. The trim around the neckline and arms are strips of lace covered with strips of the dress fabric cut on the bias so it wouldn't fray. These were then pleated and stitched on by machine. I cheated and wore my Elizabethen corset as I don't yet have a Georgian one (pretty much the same effect anyway) and I don't have any panniers either so the skirt didn't stick out as much as it could have. Instead I am wearing a small bumroll, and the gathering on the skirt helps give it fullness anyway.
