GEORGIANdress
March 2009
I am very proud of this dress. Which is probably why we got a bit snap-happy and took so many photos. And got a bit silly with some of them. But the funniest ones I'm keeping for myself :). Anyway, just as well I had the practise from the green and gold bodices, because this one fit just right. In fact, it was actually quite comfortable. I could have frolicked around in it all day.
The best part about this dress is that the fabric was brand new, and it only cost me $20, at $4 a metre. Amazing. I couldn't believe it when I found it. And the 5 metres that was left was just enough to kit out this dress perfectly. It is made up of an underskirt, which you can also see on the green dress, as well as the stomacher, and the overdress itself. The stomacher is a completely separate piece, but I actually hand-sewed it into the dress myself when I put it on for the photos (Which was actually a common practise with such styles). Until I put it on properly I wasn't sure how it would fit, but it was perfect, so now I know that I can sew it into the dress beforehand if I wish. In all, the outfit is made up of a petticoat, a large bumroll (in lieu of a pair of panniers), my ol' faithful Elizabethan corset (again, in lieu of an authentic Georgian one), the grey underskirt, the stomacher, and finally, the dress itself over the top. And I LOVE the resulting silhouette that it produced. Just love it. It's why I love the style so much. So beware...there will be many more of these to come!!
