ELIZABETHANdress

Elizabethan dress.

September 2007

I made this dress from the same pattern as the pink georgian dress, but this time it was a little altered to fit a more Elizabethan-esque style. The bodice is made out of a curtain that I saved from being thrown out by a friend after a flat spring-clean - lucky too, it's absolutely gorgeous fabric. The skirt is leftover curtain fabric that I just had lying around. It's reasonably basic, it doesn't have embellishments or anything on it, I don't even have a nice chemise to go under it, but my main concern was getting the fit and the look right. I think the only thing I'd change is the length of the bodice - I think it needs to be a little longer. But the arms turned out perfectly - I half drafted the pattern myself as you can see in the making of page. I had also made a bumroll from the pattern I used for my first Elizabethan dress, but it seemed a little big and didn't quite look right under this dress so I made a smaller one. However, I think I made this one a little too small. I am wearing it under this dress, and it does make a little bit of difference, but I might just have to make a medium-sized one at some point.

This dress is actually quite comfortable, despite the restricting corset I wore underneath it, and I'm quite happy about this because my next proposed project is going to be another Georgian dress of a pale yellow colour also made from this altered pattern - but slightly different again. It's awesome that I've found a really good all-round bodice pattern.
