SHANNON'Sdresses

ABOUTme

Shannon, of shannonsdresses.com.

I discovered dressmaking at the end of 2002, in the boredom of the holidays between the end of high school and the start of university. When I started this website at the end of 2006, I had a grand total of eight completed projects, two on the way, and countless others swarming inside my head. So yes, a combination of busyness through university and horrendous apathy didn't result in a hell of a lot of creation in that time, but in saying that, I was very proud of my small collection. And that said collection came to be known by some of my friends simply as "Shannon's Dresses".

By no means am I a proffessional, nor qualified in the field, I just learn through trial and error. I am purely an amateur. I don't aim for historical accuracy, as much as that would be awesome, at the moment I'm just concerned with it looking good.

I'm mostly interested in anything from medieval times up until the 1950s. Anything before that is too simple and anything after is recent enough that you could easily find it at an op-shop and therefore there's no point in recreating it (Unless you want something particularly awesome for a costume party). But, I do have an interest in modern evening wear as well. Pretty much all of my inspiration comes from the internet, movies, and pattern catalogues, and I've put a lot of this into the "Links" section, which now holds a rich range of online costuming resources that have been of use to me, and will hopefully be of use to others.

Outside of the sewing, I am a university graduate, having earned a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology, with a minor in Psychology, and a Diploma for Graduates in Philosophy. I'm a born and bred New Zealander, and consequently a huge fan of The Lord of the Rings movies. I used to be a budding actor, getting involved in theatre at the university, but not anymore. I'd rather be the costume designer to be honest. But for now, I continue making dresses and costumes just for the fun of it. Mainly for myself, but every now and then fill the requests of friends too.

Anyway, I've waffled on enough, I hope that gives you a little of an idea about the webmistress of this site. Thank you again for stopping by, I appreciate it.

Love Shannon
